Dr. Soucy`s teaching expertise includes more than twenty years in undergraduate and graduate classroom, clinical, small group, and online instruction. He coordinates the Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) Program where student evaluations of his teaching are consistently in the excellent range. His responsibilities include course design and yearly revisions in the PMHNP program. He has served as an active member of the Committee on Graduate Studies which oversees the entire graduate curriculum. His creativity and innovations in curriculum development and active teaching strategies include face to face classes, flipped classrooms, and online instruction, consistently moving the program forward with contemporary educational approaches. Dr. Soucy has also served as preceptor for PMHNP students in his clinical practices with underserved populations including children, adolescents and adults. Dr. Soucy serves on doctoral dissertation committees, DNP project practicum supervision and mentors research scholars in his areas of expertise. He is sought out for invited guest lectures in several graduate courses across the nurse practitioner program. In 2012 Dr. Soucy was recognized for his exceptional teaching with the University of Texas Health Science Center San Antonio?s Presidential Teaching Excellence Award and was subsequently inducted into the UT Health Science Center Academy of Master Teachers. In recognition of his exceptional teaching at the local, regional, national and international level, Dr. Soucy is the recipient of the International Society of Psychiatric Mental Health Nurses 2017 Educator Award.
In recognition of his work as an educator in local, regional, national and international venues and his work as a practitioner advancing the profession, Dr. Soucy was inducted in 2015 as a Fellow of the American Association of Nurse Practitioners.
Dr. Soucy's scholarship includes dissemination of his work in interprofessional education in community psychiatry. He has co-authored peer reviewed abstracts and a journal article on the use of reflective journaling as an educational strategy in nurse practitioner education. Additional scholarship includes several publications; 13 book chapters on psychiatric nursing practice, several journal articles related to clinical practice and novel teaching strategies, 24 peer reviewed abstracts as author or co-author presented at national and international forums in areas of nursing education and clinical practice and more than 25 invited presentations locally, regionally and nationally since 2010.
Dr. Soucy is active in service as a member of the International Society of Psychiatric Mental Health Nurses (ISPN), past Chair of the ISPN Education Council, and past Chair of the ISPN Web Site Committee. Dr. Soucy served on the ISPN task force developing and publishing a White Paper on the educational needs of Family Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioners in Child/Adolescent Psychiatric Practice. He has also served on the faculty resource committee of the National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties. His sustained service to the profession includes serving as peer reviewer for the Journal of Pediatric Nursing and Perspectives in Psychiatric Care.
In addition to maintaining an active clinical practice, Dr. Soucy maintains triple board certification in psychiatric mental health advanced practice specialties. For excellence in practice, he is a past recipient of the ISPN Clinical Practice Award. His current clinical practice is focused on providing mental health care to adolescents in an inner city community based school health program as well as college students and employees in an academic health science center. His service also includes membership in the UT Health Science Center Faculty Compensation Committee, the UT Health Science Center Computing Resources Committee, the School of Nursing Faulty Compensation Committee and the School of Nursing?s Committee on Graduate Studies. His leadership includes elected service as former Chair of the School of Nursing?s Faculty Assembly.
