Dorothy A Long Parma, M.D.
Assistant Professor/Research
Dr. Long Parma is an early-stage investigator interested in health promotion and disease prevention aimed at eliminating health disparities (HD) in underserved populations, particularly Latinos in South Texas. Among the multiple disparities seen in this population, Dr. Long Parma is focusing her research on risk factors for gastric cancer (GC), in particular interactions of infectious (i.e., the bacterium Helicobacter pylori) with behavioral/lifestyle factors. The breadth of experiences that preceded her current appointment have not only contributed to her ability to facilitate collaborations between public health researchers and basic scientists, but also gave her a healthy appreciation for the value of a multidisciplinary team approach in accelerating meaningful changes at both individual and population health levels. Dr. Long Parma has molecular biology background in college; graduate-level experience in Developmental Neuroscience; clinical experience in Family Medicine; and finally, an MPH in health promotion and behavioral science, has made her a valued contributor to projects with clinical components and clinically-relevant, patient-oriented outcomes.
