Daniel C Hughes, Ph.D.

Assistant Professor/Research

Institute for Health Promotion Research at UT Health San Antonio

Dr. Hughes is a doctorally trained Ph.D. in Kinesiology with a sport and exercise psychology specialty. He is an American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) Certified Clinical Exercise Physiologist and American Heart Association ACLS certified. His research focus is on bio-behavioral holistic interventions for cancer prevention and control with an emphasis on culturally adapting and motivationally tailoring health promotion interventions targeting ethnic/racial cancer populations.

He has project expertise in kinesiology, behavioral science, and health disparities and applying behavioral interventions to cancer survivors. He has been a Principal Investigator on several NCI funded studies on behavioral interventions that utilized Social Cognitive Theory implementation strategies for post-treatment cancer survivors presenting with high-comorbidities including conducting exercise behavioral research with breast cancer survivors in the San Antonio as well as the South Texas-Mexico border regions using culturally adapted individually tailored interventions.

He has also been a member of the Movember GAP 4 world-wide study on high-intensity exercise interventions for metastatic prostate cancer survivors, developing the psycho-social support components for the study. His research is transitioning now to use more holistic interventions including mind-body mechanisms to improve not only physical functioning but also psychological and spiritual well-being for all adult cancer survivors.
