Paul B. Allen, Sr., DSc, MPAS, PA-C, FAAPA
Associate Professor
Program Director and Chair
Dr. Paul Allen joined the US Army in 1989 serving in the Intelligence Corps. He began his career in medicine in 1993 as a Special Forces Medical Sergeant and EMT-Paramedic deploying worldwide on contingency operations for the US Army, then later in his career becoming a Physician Assistant (PA) as mentors encouraged him to take his medical knowledge to the next level. Upon graduation from the Inter-service PA program, he was assigned as a battalion PA with the 82nd Airborne Division for the invasion of Iraq. After completing a yearlong tour with the infantry treating disease non-battle injury, conducting multiple trauma resuscitations and evacuations of combat casualties, he was nominated for an assignment as a surgical team leader back within the special operations community. While there, he continued to deploy in support of combat operations, leading surgical teams in austere and remote locations in support of special operations and training, participating in damage control resuscitations, prolonged field care and damage control surgeries. In order to further his understanding of emergency medicine and resuscitation, he attended the US Army/Baylor University Physician Assistant Doctoral Residency in Emergency Medicine at Brooke Army Medical Center and upon graduation, he was assigned as the Research Director, Associate Program Director and Program Director within the residency while continuing to deploy as an individual augmentee in support of special operations forces until his retirement after 27 years of military service at the rank of Major. Since then he has stayed active in the pre-hospital academic community and continues to volunteer his time teaching tactical medical subjects to US Army Physician Residents each year here in San Antonio, and advises the Defense Health Agency (DHA) as a subject matter expert on Austere Resuscitation and Surgical Teams with the Committees on Surgical Combat Casualty Care (CoSCCC), Tactical Combat Casualty Care (CoTCCC) and Enroute Combat Casualty Care (CoERCCC). He is also the current Military Vice President for the Special Operations Medical Association.
His military awards and decorations include the Combat Field Medic badge, Military Freefall Jumpmaster badge, Master Parachutist badge, Special Forces tab, Legion of Merit, Bronze Star Medal 4th award, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, US Army Meritorius Service Medal, Air Medal, and the Joint Service Commendation Medal amongst others. He is a member of US Army Medical and Dental Departments Order of Military Medical Merit.
